Sometimes it might be a good idea to share a personal story demonstrating why you do the work you do. What drives you. When you do this, you can easily create a common ground with colleagues who work in the same industry as you, because they will relate to your experience.

Occasionally, you might find yourself addressing a group of people from varying backgrounds.

People who don’t have much in common. In this situation, you have to work a little harder to find that common ground. The broader the audience, the easier it is to find common ground.

When speaking to a group that is completely foreign to you, it would be important to do research into their culture and history so that you can identify with them.

For example, if you are talking to French people and you are not French, you would need to research something that means a lot to them to show that you have taken time to learn about them.

If done well, it will establish a connection. Pay attention to the feedback they give you.
